It’s interesting: I started a blog post about the power of prayer quite a while ago, then read today in the First Presidency Message from President Eyring. The title of this months message is Exhort them to Pray.
As I read the talk, it made me think directly about the time I had a big question – should I stay or should I go (with Becky to visit her family for Christmas during our dramatic dating season).
Here is what I wrote in my journal from that experience:
12.5.2001
Well, I prayed last night and pondered a lot. I then slept comfortably and had this interesting dream: Two kids were racing around a track or something on motorcycles. They were neck and neck and were very skilled riders. The funny thing was, they just kept going and going. It seemed like one was a little behind the other, and as the crowd watched, not knowing when they were going to stop, the one trailing decided to take a risk and make an extreme jump. As he prepared to land, however, he could see that he was going to land right on top of the other rider so he bailed. The bike did land on the other rider and it seemed to me that both were killed. In the dream it seemed like I was watching the race from the side and there were no other riders. When they wrecked I ran to check on them but I knew there was nothing I could do. That was my dream.
Now, how does it apply?
Who knows! but I just studied this scripture the other day and it came to my head as I was emailing this message to Mom: Hebrews 12:1-2 “…let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” This may be stupid but this dream could have meant that I need to slow down and evaluate things a little. There Becky and I are, racing around and not really knowing where we’re going or when we’re going to stop. One of us decides to take an extreme risk and we both end up getting hurt.
How interesting, I just looked up “revelation” in the Topical Guide and the first “See also” was “Dreams”. I looked at dreams and found many scriptures. Here are a few that relate:
Gen. 42:9, Numbers 12:6, Matt. 2:12, 1 Nephi 1:16, 1 Nephi 8:2, Ether 9:3…
I think these are all confirmations of the dream, or warning, I had last night. It doesn’t necessarily mean to rule Becky out just yet, it just means I need to slow down, let things run there course a little, strive to do what is right, and Heavenly Father will lead my by the hand and give me answers to my prayers. I feel he has here in this case – I feel I’m on the road that leads to eternal life. I recognize many imperfections I have – namely PRIDE, but I know DILIGENT SCRIPTURE STUDY is the way to overcome weaknesses and make them strengths. It’s like Alma the Younger and the sons of Mosiah in Alma 17:2-3. So this is the equation or the FORMULA: Search scriptures diligently, fasting and prayer frequently = spirit of prophecy = spirit of revelation = power and authority of God = desires to serve others for the right reason = wanting and striving to keep the commandments all of the time = ENDURING TO THE END = ETERNAL LIFE! Wow, this is another one of those deep studies of the scriptures. So much good information to be applies in my life I know what I need to do.
P.S. Becky and I went out tonight to run some errands and then to eat (at The Trolley in Springville). We had a long talk about the Wisconsin thing, about how it wouldn’t change things and about how next semester will tell a lot.
This was so fun to read and remember how it all felt.
I’m glad it turned out the way it did after all. 🙂
Hasta luego!
Nate
