General Conference October 2013 Morning Session

By N Leave a Comment

I’m excited to watch conference with the kids. (I just saw Randy Jensen singing in the choir!)

We’ve all made questions that we’ll be listening for during conference. Here they are:

Caleb’s Questions:

  • Why do people wander away from the path?
  • Why is Satan so evil?

Madi’s Questions:

  • How can I improve my talents?
  • How can I be a peacemaker in our home?

Chloe’s questions:

  • How can I be good for the Gospel?

Mom’s questions:

  • How can I be a better wife?
  • How can I be more gentle, kind and patient?
  • What can I do to help my kids not argue and fight with each other?

Dad’s questions:

  • How can I be less angry?
  • How can I help the Spirit be more in our home all the time?
  • What can I do to help Caleb, Madi, Chloe and Jayden reach their full potential as sons and daugthers of God?

President Thomas S. Monson:

President Monson shared that there are almost 80,000 missionaries, a substantial growth since last year when the new age for missionaries was announced.

Song: Israel, Israel God is Calling

Elder Robert D. Hales

  • Conference has always been an important part of the Church.
  • Conference talks topics aren’t assigned. Each of the people have to go through prayerful preparation and through the Holy Ghost.
  • We study it out in our minds, we pray to understand and apply that which our taught.
  • We gather our families to hear the word of the Lord.
  • To the young members of the Church, I promise that if you’ll listen, the Lord will tell you what He wants you to do with your life.
  • “As I listened to your address I was astounded: your talk was personal revelation from the Lord to my family…the Holy Ghost spoke directly to me.”
  • “I’ve never before felt so profoundly that a talk was given directly to me.”
  • When I take notes, I don’t always write down exactly what is being said. Instead, I write down what I felt and understand.
  • Through conference our faith is fortified, our testimonies strengthened, and our questions answers.
  • The world is moving farther and farther away from the truthfulness of the Gospel.
  • We may not always like what the authorities teach – but if we listen and try to understand and follow their words, the gates of hell shall not prevail against us.
  • The greatest answers can come from General Conference after it’s over as we try to put the teachings of the Conference into practice.
  • After the Savior talked to the people in the Americas, he told them to go and ponder the things they’d been taught.
  • President Monson encourages to read the talks and ponder the messages: we can get even more out of them when we study the words of the prophets and apostles. (I think we should read a talk as part of our scripture study when the Ensign comes out.)
  • Conference is shared in 95 languages.
  • In two or three days the messages will be on LDS.org. 3 weeks later the talks will be in the Ensign.
  • I just shared this on Facebook: “Want to know what Mormons believe and are taught? Check out General Conference: http://bit.ly/19lSQHd?“

Elder Ulisses Soares

  •  Taking Christ name upon us – what does that mean? how do we do that?
  • “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father in Heaven in perfect.”
  • Christlike attributes are gifts from God.
  • Recognizing our weaknesses and submitting our will to God is the best first step.
  • What does it mean to be MEEK?
  • Becoming more Christlike takes time – a constant focus and desire.
  • How to become meek?
  • 1. Become better day by day. Try to overcome our weaknesses day by day.
  • 2. Control our temper. How do I react when someone doesn’t want to do what I think they should do? How do I respond when someone disagrees with me?
  • Controlling our temper is most important with the walls of our homes.
  • I need to strive every day to control my temper and submit my will to God.
  • 3. Become humble.

Sister Carol Stephens

  • The Holy Ghost belongs to every faithful man, woman, and child.
  • We need to receive the temple endowment and got to the temple.
  • We need to be sealed together.
  • We need the opportunity to renew our covenants each week as we take the sacrament.
  • Do we know who we are?
  • Do we know what we have?
  • Are we willing and worthy to receive the gifts of the priesthood?

Song: There is Sunshine in My Soul Today

Elder Edward Dube

  • The covenants we’ve made are a life-long commitment
  • In the service of the Lord, it’s not where you serve but HOW
  • Don’t look back and think you’ve done enough – there’s always more to do
  • “Out of small things proceedeth that which is great…”
  • In 1846, more than 10,000 people left Nauvoo with faith in their leaders. They didn’t even know exactly where they were going.

Elder David A. Bednar

  • He’s talking about two important principles relating to the Law of Tithing
  • He talked about how the money is distributed
  • He talked about the types of blessings we can expect as we pay an honest and full tithe
