Step 4 Section 7
Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).
Being honest with yourself and with the Lord, who is also known as the “Spirit of truth” (D&C 93:9), is the key to freedom from the lies that enslave you. As you come to know Him, His power and presence in your life will free you from addiction. How can recognizing truth improve your relationship with Jesus Christ?
Jesus Christ is truth. As I really strive to know Him, I’m sure the windows of Heaven are opened even more and I will continue to discover truths that I didn’t fully understand before. Just the simple concept of PRAYER has been opened up to me. Scriptures make so much more sense now, especially when they talk about “praying always that ye may come off conqueror…” How can that NOT be about addiction to sin?
This question reminds me of the answer I gave in church a few weeks ago. We were talking about returning to live with our Heavenly Father and what it will be like. I thought about it and said something like, “The only way we’ll feel really comfortable returning to the presence of our Heavenly Father is if we really know Him, if we talk with Him frequently, if we read His words, if we do His will. Otherwise, when we return, we’ll be embarrassed or feel uncomfortable because we don’t really know Him that well after all.”
As I recognize truth, I will come to know how great a role Christ plays in the eternal plan of happiness. The world is full of truths, both spiritual and temporal truths.
Coming to Know Him
- Studying the words of the prophets, ancient and modern
- Praying diligently
- Serving others
- Asking in our prayers specifically for direction and guidance in coming to know Him
- Raising our children with the guidance of the Spirit: to me, this is one of the best ways to come to know God – it’s becoming like Him as we are parents; it’s learning to love our children despite their weaknesses and imperfections; it’s learning how to love and have patience.
- Being worthy of the Spirit always
- Practicing and implementing the things I study in the scriptures and words of the modern prophets
