Agency – A Divine Choice

By N

What a perfect day: I woke up on a Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m., picked up 6 young men, and we participated in a team triathlon (I did the biking of 8.5 miles).  Then, after than, we went to Macy’s for ice cream.

Immediately following this morning rendezvous, Becky and I hopped in the van and went to Salt Lake to see Miss Saigon and eat at the Melting Pot.  It was a great date and we had so much fun talking and enjoying our time together.  Uncle Andy was a trooper and took care of the kids for like 9 hours – dang!

Now, I’m sitting in bed at 11:35 next to Becky, who is about asleep after being down for about 3 minutes.

I started a study a few months ago about Agency.  Here are some things I found:

In mortality men are free to choose, and each choice begets a consequence. – President Boyd K. Packer, Who Is Jesus Christ?

“Now, repentance could not come unto men except there were a punishment” (Alma 42:16).

If men were merely animals, then logic favors freedom without accountability…Events from the Creation to the final, winding-up scene are not based on chance; they are based on choice! It was planned that way.

Agency is one of the greatest gifts Heavenly Father has given us as His children.  The more I think about it, addiction is the opposite of agency.  That’s why all sin is spiritual death, because it takes away our agency.  Without agency, we become as Lucifer and his followers, who seem to have no possibility of progression or choice.

I will study this later tomorrow.  I’m grateful that agency is such an integral part of the Plan of Happiness.
