For this end was the law given; wherefore the law hath become dead unto us, and we are made alive in Christ because of our faith; yet we keep the law because of the commandments” (2 Nephi 25:25).
We are “made alive in Christ because of our faith” in Him. What does it mean that the law is dead to us? Why do we continue to keep the law or obey the commandments?
In this case, I believe they are speaking about the Law of Moses, which becomes “dead” with the Atonement of Jesus Christ, which fulfills the Law of Moses by the shedding of human blood and overrides the Law of Moses.
The law is dead because instead of following the Law of Moses, we now follow the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
We continue to obey the commandments because they are the path that lead us back to God – they are the direct map that, if we keep, we will find true happiness in this life and in the life to come.
I had the chance to review the 10 Commandments with my primary class on Sunday. It was astounding how many of the commandments are looked over as if they don’t even exist. A few that really stuck out:
- Thou shalt not covet
- Thou shalt not bear false witness
- Thou shalt not take the name of God in vain
- Thou shalt not commit adultery
I’m grateful to be a member of the Church where we still focus on these core principles. I feel the program has helped me learn how to better live these principles.
Hasta Luego!
Nate
